In today’s digital landscape, web applications are pivotal to the operations of businesses, serving as the primary interface for customer interactions, transactions, and service delivery. However, the increasing sophistication of cyber threats makes it essential to secure these applications against potential vulnerabilities. Every android, iOS and vision pro app development company uses various methods that can ensure the safety and security of app users and their data.

There are numerous methods to check the conformity of security measures, but this blog explores five significant web application risks that penetration testing can reveal, highlighting the importance of this proactive approach to cybersecurity.

What is Penetration Testing?

Penetration testing, also known as pen testing, is a simulated cyberattack performed on a computer system to identify and exploit vulnerabilities. It’s like hiring an ethical hacker to try and break into your system to see how secure it is.

The goal is to proactively find weaknesses before real attackers can exploit them. This helps organizations improve their security posture and prevent data breaches, financial losses, and reputational damage.

Penetration testers use the same tools and techniques as real hackers, but with the authorization and knowledge of the organization being tested. This allows them to safely explore the system and report their findings to the security team.

Here are 5 application risks that can be identified using penetration testing:

  1. SQL Injection Vulnerabilities

SQL injection (SQLi) is a common attack vector where malicious SQL statements are inserted into an entry field for execution. This can allow attackers to manipulate a web application’s database, gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data, modifying database contents, or even executing administrative operations.

Revealing SQL Injection through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers use automated tools and manual techniques to simulate SQL injection attacks. By attempting to inject SQL commands into web forms, URL parameters, or cookies, testers can identify whether the application properly sanitizes and validates user inputs. Discovering SQLi vulnerabilities enables developers to implement proper input validation and parameterized queries, significantly reducing the risk of database manipulation.

  1. Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Flaws

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) is an attack where malicious scripts are injected into trusted websites. These scripts are then executed in the user’s browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, and redirection to malicious sites.

Revealing XSS through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers identify XSS vulnerabilities by injecting malicious scripts into web forms, comment sections, or URL parameters. By examining how the application processes and displays user-generated content, testers can pinpoint weaknesses in input handling and encoding. Addressing these flaws often involves implementing robust input validation, output encoding, and Content Security Policy (CSP) to mitigate the impact of XSS attacks.

  1. Broken Authentication and Session Management

Authentication and session management are critical components of web application security. Weaknesses in these areas can lead to unauthorized access, session hijacking, and impersonation.

Revealing Authentication Flaws through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers assess the robustness of authentication mechanisms by attempting to exploit weaknesses such as weak passwords, inadequate session timeout settings, and flawed implementation of multi-factor authentication. Every iPhone app development company has to be extra careful for these issues as Apple has very strict policies regarding data safety and security. They may also test for session fixation and session hijacking vulnerabilities by analyzing how session IDs are managed and transmitted. Identifying these issues enables developers to enhance authentication protocols, enforce strong password policies, and secure session management practices.

  1. Insecure Direct Object References (IDOR)

Insecure Direct Object References (IDOR) occur when an application exposes internal object references (e.g., database keys or file names) without proper authorization checks. This can allow attackers to manipulate these references to access unauthorized data.

Revealing IDOR through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers attempt to manipulate object references in URL parameters, form fields, or API requests to see if unauthorized access is granted. For instance, by changing a user ID in a URL, testers can check if they can access another user’s account information. Identifying IDOR vulnerabilities allows developers to implement proper authorization checks and access controls, ensuring that only authorized users can access sensitive resources.

  1. Security Misconfigurations

Security misconfigurations occur when security settings are incorrectly implemented, leaving the application or its components vulnerable to attacks. Companies offering mobile app development services have to be prudent to check whether their apps are susceptible to such a risk. This specific security issue can include misconfigured web servers, databases, or application frameworks.

Revealing Misconfigurations through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers evaluate the configuration settings of the web application and its infrastructure. They look for default accounts, unpatched software, exposed directories, and inadequate security headers. By uncovering these misconfigurations, testers help organizations address them promptly, ensuring that security best practices are followed and potential entry points for attackers are closed.

  1. Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF)

Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) is an attack that forces a logged-in user to execute unwanted actions on a web application in which they are authenticated. By tricking the user into making a request, attackers can perform actions like changing account settings, making transactions, or accessing sensitive information without the user’s knowledge.

Revealing CSRF through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers attempt to generate and execute forged requests from a different site, assessing whether the application properly validates the origin of requests. Identifying CSRF vulnerabilities helps developers implement anti-CSRF tokens and other verification mechanisms, ensuring that requests are legitimate and intended by the authenticated user.

  1. Insufficient Logging and Monitoring

Effective logging and monitoring are crucial for detecting and responding to security incidents. Without proper logging, suspicious activities may go unnoticed, delaying the response to breaches and increasing the potential damage.

Revealing Insufficient Logging and Monitoring through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers review the application’s logging and monitoring setup, checking for adequate logging of security-related events, such as failed login attempts, changes to user roles, and access to sensitive data. They also evaluate whether alerts are generated for suspicious activities and if there are established procedures for responding to these alerts. Identifying gaps in logging and monitoring allows organizations to enhance their detection and response capabilities, ensuring timely action against potential threats.

  1. Business Logic Flaws

Business logic flaws are application-specific vulnerabilities that arise from weaknesses in the design and implementation of business processes. These flaws can allow attackers to manipulate application workflows to achieve unintended actions, such as bypassing payment steps or exploiting discount mechanisms.

Revealing Business Logic Flaws through Penetration Testing:

Penetration testers examine the application’s workflows and attempt to exploit logical weaknesses. They simulate scenarios that an attacker might use to bypass intended business rules. Identifying business logic flaws enables developers to redesign processes and implement checks to ensure that workflows operate as intended and cannot be manipulated maliciously.

Conclusion

Penetration testing is an invaluable practice for uncovering critical vulnerabilities in web applications before they can be exploited by malicious actors. By simulating real-world attacks, penetration testers can reveal weaknesses such as SQL injection vulnerabilities, XSS flaws, broken authentication, IDOR, and security misconfigurations. Addressing these risks not only strengthens the security posture of web applications but also protects sensitive data, maintains user trust, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

Organizations must prioritize regular penetration testing as part of their comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. As cyber threats continue to evolve, staying proactive in identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities is essential to safeguarding digital assets and maintaining the integrity of web applications in an increasingly interconnected world.

With Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 launch this year, Microsoft announced the new Your Phone experience that allows mobile users to run a number of Android apps on their desktop simultaneously.  Currently accessible on the Galaxy Note 20, the feature will soon support other devices too. While the Your Phone app already enables Android users to view notifications, texts and files on their Windows 10 PC; the new Android devices can even support this feature and mirror the user’s smartphone screen directly to their PC’s desktop. However, this compatibility is only available with Samsung devices temporarily, but Microsoft has announced further expansions over time.

The new feature allows interaction with a larger screen, by enabling smartphone users to run Android apps on their desktop, using a keyboard and mouse. Users can even pin their favorite apps to the Taskbar or Start menu to facilitate quick and easy access. When launching an Android app, it opens in a separate window on your PC, allowing you to multitask. The Windows 10 desktop also displays Android app notifications. The feature is likely going to enhance overall productivity, especially for those employees who use both phones and desktops to perform their tasks. This integration will enable them to execute tasks from a single source. Similarly, for those who wish to view apps on a larger screen, such as developers and gamers, this feature will add to the overall experience. More importantly in these corona times, when most of us are working from home, this feature can prove really helpful and can actually help eliminate distractions; by allowing you to only open those apps on your PC that are important for your work-related commitments.

For the time being, Your Phone can only enable a single Android app to run on a PC but soon it will support multiple apps at once, as promised by Microsoft. What we already know is that not all Android apps will be supportive of the new Your Phone feature. Microsoft has informed that some may even block the casting ability, enabling a black screen instead. Moreover, some of the apps and games available on Android will also not respond to a mouse or keyboard, while some may play audio via the phone.

Users interested in experiencing the new Your Phone apps feature will need a Samsung device. Microsoft has issued a list of Android phones, but If you’re interested in trying out the new Your Phone apps feature, you’ll need a Samsung device. It will also require you to opt into Windows insider testing. In order to avoid testing full Windows Insider testing, you can opt into the Release Preview ring.

What’s required for a seamless execution?

Other than a Samsung Galaxy handset, you’ll need a PC running the Windows 10 version. You can confirm your version by going to your PC’s settings; enter updates and security to check updates. If it requires you to upgrade, you can download Windows 10 for free. Since its initial release in 2015, Windows 10 has seen several feature updates, with no additional cost to the consumer. Once you get Windows 10, you never have to pay for any upgrades. With more control over the updates, users can even delay updating Windows for a considerable period of time.

To connect your Android phone to your PC, it is important that the device is running on Android 9.0 version. You will also need Link for Windows integration. Most importantly, for the feature to work, the phone and PC should be on the same Wi-Fi network.

This is how you can run Android apps on your Windows 10 PC

Once everything has been updated and your device is successfully connected to the computer, the Your Phone app window will appear on your desktop. In order to open your Android apps on the desktop, you will need to do the following:

The first step is to click the Apps shortcut from the menu, appearing on the left. It will allow you to see a list of all the apps on your phone.

You can now click on the app you wish to test and it should open in a separate window on your desktop.

While not all apps are going to work with a mouse or keyboard, some will.

Below mentioned are a few tips that will help you interact with mobile apps on your desktop, using a mouse or keyboard:

  • Single click will aid a single touch/tap interaction.
  • To go to the previous page, you can right click anywhere on your phone screen.
  • Click and hold will enable the same tap/hold interaction.
  • To select content, click, hold and drag.
  • Use mouse scroll to move between pages vertically or horizontally.

If you want to run Android apps on your Windows PC, there is no shortage of emulators that you can use. A number of users, such as developers would need it for debugging, gamers can enjoy games on a larger screen, so on so forth. While most of the Emulators are not up to the mark, there are some that allow a seamless integration. Whether you are a developer looking to test out games or a user looking to play games, you will find one that fits your requirements.

To keep updated with the latest app developments, please follow our blog and we will make sure you are disappointed.

VPN services are meant to provide users a private and secure environment but if a bug has entered the VPN then that could become a real problem. However, in the latest Windows update in May 2019, Microsoft announced the possibility of a bug in its VPN services.

Now this bug can likely interfere with all the private networks users use. The direct connection of this bug is with the Remote Access Connection Manager that lets Windows OS control and manage all the connected VPNs.

What does RASMAN do exactly? Does it just connect and manage all active and current VPN connections? RASMAN has to work and keep on running in the background or else the VPN will lose its connectivity and access. This bug will hamper directly in RASMAN and most likely break the connection of the VPN.

Who exactly uses a VPN?

Now that you know Windows 10 has a new VPN bug, you should now understand what exactly the purpose of a VPN is and who uses it. Probably every individual who has access to the internet has used a VPN or created a virtual private network for one reason or another. So, a great amount of people is used to using VPNs and the reason is mostly security or privacy. Now if there is an interference in the security of a private network then it certainly does not sound acceptable. There probably exist over a million people who are Windows users so they would have been affected by this recent Windows 10 bug.

Windows 10 VPN Bug

The VPN services rely on RASMAN so if that stops working abruptly then know there has been the hampering of a bug that has caused this abrupt error. Microsoft has become aware of the bug and has even uploaded an official message about the error on its support page.

According to Microsoft, this issue is related to the configuration of a VPN profile. If you have changed the configuration settings to AOVPN, which stands for ‘Always On VPN’ then that is what is causing this bug to interfere. However, if you have created a manual connection to a VPN account or profile then you are going to stay unaffected.

Unfortunately, the usual habit of many people is to use an AOVPN and that is what has caused this bug to occur. Regions and countries that have censorship issues or restrictions are the ones where VPNs are used the most commonly. AOVPN can be disabled but that would have its worse effects as well.

How do you fix the bug for good?

Now on to the main concern – the solution to get rid of this VPN bug. Currently, the only possible solution is one, which we are going to guide you through as well. The most proper solution is the following:

  • First, open your PC and from there open the Computer Configuration.
  • Now once you are there, go to Administrative Templates.
  • Later on, look for Windows Components.
  • Go to Data Collection and Preview Builds.
  • Click on Allow Telemetry
  • Now enable Safe Policy Setting to different levels (Basic, Enhanced, and Full)

What other methods and alternatives exist?

If you think this option alone is not feasible enough then there is an alternative available as well. You can access your Windows Registry file and make some needed changes to it. However, only follow this alternative method if you know how to access and make changes to the Registry. If not, you will make some serious issues to the registry files and lose some important data. So it is suggested to follow the method we have mentioned earlier since it is simple and has fewer chances of risks involved as well.

Without a doubt, the upcoming 5G phones technology in 2019 would replace the prior data technologies and almost every phone, by the year 2019, would be integrated with it. While few mobile devices have confirmed the use of 5G is in their new releases, some still are clouded by rumors.

While there is no guarantee about a Windows or an iOS 5G phone, most of the Android phone manufacturers are extending their domain towards 5G and it is expected that most of these mobile devices would be released later or earlier in the year 2019.

Here are the mobile phones that are either expected or rumored to be distributed in the coming year:

Samsung Galaxy S10

2019 is said to be a great year for the South Korean maker Samsung and with the Samsung Galaxy S10 rumors surfacing, it is also expected for this new phone to transition to 5G technology.

In the recent Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, a prototype version of a phone, expected to the Galaxy S10, was revealed. It comes with a variety of features but the most prominence was given to its display that can play 4K resolution movies and videos. However, the launch of a 5G phone was still not confirmed yet but after the several hints and rumor, it is finally certain the new Samsung phones in 2019 will be equipped with 5G.

It is certain that Apple would not be releasing a 5G phone anytime soon so it might give the new Samsung phones an upper hand with its new 5G features. With this technology, users can experience high-speed downloads and stream videos at a faster speed. The thought of the possibility of the release of a 5G phone earlier next year is a promising one.

With several rumors surfacing, it is also rumored that four Galaxy S10 models will be released on Samsung’s 10 anniversary. However, there is no confirmation about it yet and it might stay as a rumor.

Huawei P30 and Mate 30

It is confirmed that Huawei is happening to be working on a 5G smartphone but its release is still not verified yet. The two new Huawei phones are set to be the P30 and the Mate 30 but the incorporation of 5G might be in the Mate series by next September and there is a possibility that the P30 might not be equipped with this technology.

Since a 5G phone would require more power so it might take Huawei some time to develop a chipset that could handle the power consumed by a 5G phone. Huawei users and mobile developers, in general, have not been disappointed with its previous phone releases and that is why 2019 sounds like a promising year for Huawei.

It is possible that other than the 5G incorporation, the speed and connectivity of the new phones would see some changes and improvements too. Another issue that most smartphone users have started to face are related to battery consumption if Huawei sorts it out in 2019 so it would surely make smartphone users resort to Huawei’s mobile devices.

Honor

While there has been no visible confirmation of a 5G phone by both the Huawei and Samsung representatives but the CEO of Honor himself has confirmed that they would release a 5G equipped phone in the year 2019.

It is also addressed by the Honor CEO that they would be the first ever mobile manufacturers to release a 5G mobile device. That is a statement, which would let Honor’s rivals reconsider the release of this new technology. For that reason, other smartphone manufacturers might distribute it earlier than the time they had decided to release it.

OnePlus 7 and 7T

Just like the confirmation statement given by Honor’s CEO, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has also stated that they are working with a team of US manufacturers for the production of a 5G smartphone. The prior phones were OnePlus 6 and 6T therefore; the new releases of the OnePlus 7 and 7T could be manufactured with the 5G technology.

Since the release of a 5G OnePlus phone is no longer a rumor, it is certain to watch out for a OnePlus 7 announcement with 5G in 2019. The benefits of 5G are countless but most people are looking forward to experience high speed and great phone performance.

However, the release date of the new OnePlus phones is expected to be in either May or July of 2019. That is why Samsung, Huawei, and even Honor might have released their 5G phones before OnePlus does.

Sony Xperia XZ4

The new Sony phone might be called Xperia XZ4 and it might be released with a new name but that is not our main concern. The Xperia XZ3 did not have any 5G functionalities but it is expected that the new release might have it.

There has been no official announcement from Sony regarding a 5G mobile device but the Sony representatives made statements regarding super-fast mobile connectivity and performance and that might not be a coincidence. Almost every manufacturer is working on a 5G device and it is a possibility that so might be Sony.

It has been announced that the next Sony phones would have a battery life that could last a week. Therefore, if Sony does release a 5G phone then it could be equipped with both better battery life and 5G features.

What about iPhone?

2018 has been an iPhone exclusive year with the release of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and even the iPhone XR but what about 2019? There have been rumors out that Apple could be bringing a 5G phone but some experts have said that an iPhone with 5G would not be happening anytime soon.

Apple might have a lot planned for 2019 but the release of a phone with 5G does not sound like a possibility yet. It is also likely that Apple might not incorporate this technology until 2020. It is demoralizing for many as Apple users were holding high expectations for a 5G iPhone but as of now nothing is completely certain and confirmed.

However, there have been reports that Apple might be manufacturing its own modem and it would be used in place of the already incorporated Intel technology chipset. Apple is always steadfast in releasing and announcing new features and functionalities but let us observe who leads the race of 5G technology.

Announced in May 2015, Google has provided us with the option to acquire unlimited storage from Google Photos. Whether you are using an Android operating system, iOS, or Windows, if you happen to be running out of space then you can utilize Google Photos to save your images, photo or any other form of data.

However, when this announcement was made, it simply sounded too good to be true but a recent statement has clarified a new catch in the unlimited storage option of Google Photos. Some thought that the option of having unlimited storage would never be possible but it turned into a reality but since a number of issues continued to persist, Google has brought certain limitations to this storage option.

What is this new update in Google Photos Storage?

Previously, you could use unlimited storage in Google Photos by placing your video files in a compressed format but that has been changed. There now have been limitations in the supported file formats for videos and these video formats would now occupy space on your Google Drive instead of being uploaded on Google Photos in an unlimited storage cloud. This change has been addressed after people were reported using this storage option for files that are not photos or videos.

With the announcement of this limitation in storage availability, now certain video files would be compressed but would acquire space inside Google Drive, while some will not. Google has announced the file formats that are still being supported by Google Photos and the ones that are not.

This update occurred on December 6, 2018 and the video file formats that are supported are .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts and .mkv. However, RAW files will not be supported in Google Photos and that is not a major concern, as this file format was not widely used by smartphone users.

Why the need for this update?

There has not been any statement as to why this update has been made but a possible explanation is that users had been utilizing the space meant for videos and photos for files that were non-photos and videos. This act occupied a lot of unnecessary space and made a negative impact on the performance of Google Photos. There has been no proper statement as to why Google has made this decision but many people have speculated that fiddling with the unlimited storage option was certainly not the right thing to do and it came at a consequence.

How To Use Google Photos For Unlimited Storage

With the use of Google Photos, you can acquire the choice to store an unlimited number of videos and photos. It even has the option for automatic uploads for Android, iOS, Mac and Windows operating systems. This storage option existed alongside Google+ but since it was not known back then, Google decided to completely revamp it and brought it to a new interface.

Using this storage option is extremely simple, as you just need to have a Google account for it. In order to configure your account on Google Photos, you just have to sign in with your Google account and store your photos just like how you would in the Google Drive. Whatever you save to your Google Drive will be automatically uploaded to Google Photos.

You are also provided with the option to choose the quality of your photos and videos. You can either save them in a high-quality format or keep those files in their original size format. However, it is recommended to choose the option of the original size as it can save up more space for further uploads.

Additional Google Photos Features

This feature does not provide any impact on Google Photos but Assistant Cards are a fun and quirky way to save your photos. Google will automatically generate an album of similar images or the images you saved on a certain date and suggest you create an album out of it. That is not all as you will also be given reminders regarding your recent uploads and you can even turn your images into GIFs or short videos and share it across various online platforms.

You can save images in their original resolution or you have the option to choose a high-quality image resolution. Sharing photos to others on other mediums such as Whatsapp or Facebook ruins the quality and resolution of the images but that is not the case with Google Photos. If you want to share photos then you can create a shareable link and share it across any medium or channel of your choice.

The option for an intelligent search exists in Google Photos. If you want to look for a specific photo from your album then you can use a keyword for it, supposedly “sky” or “water” and images that contain these elements would show up. Google Photos is also equipped with the option to edit the photos and videos you upload. You can crop and make any adjustments that you desire by accessing the editing mode.

A Final Verdict

The recent change in the unlimited free storage option has not brought any limitations as only certain boundaries have been set and a number of file formats will not be supported. Other than that, there has been no adverse change in the functionality of Google Photos and it will continue to provide users with the option to store unlimited photos and videos without any hurdles. You can easily avoid choosing an unsupported file format by capturing photos or recording videos in formats supported by Google Photos beforehand.
